Yu Cheng, PhD
Senior Data Scientist
Yu Cheng, Ph.D., is a senior data scientist at SFL Scientific, working with clients on novel computer vision, deep learning, and AI-based decision-making initiatives. He earned his Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami, studying large-scale ocean circulation using a state-of-the-art coupled climate model. As a climate scientist with expertise in data wrangling, predictive modeling, and scientific programming, prior to joining SFL Scientific, Yu was a Senior Data Scientist at a weather technology organization developing novel weather layers for a weather intelligence platform. He was the lead scientist of a cloud-based pipeline to derive global precipitation estimates by merging multiple satellite data feeds, working to inform large organizations (Ford, Uber, etc.) while solving business and operational use cases dependent on accurate weather predictions. Working on internal R&D, Yu prototyped a CNN-based rain rate conversion algorithm based on the satellite pipeline and participated in multiple satellite-images-focused deep learning competitions. ML/AI has been Yu’s passion for years, and he enjoys solving challenging problems using data-driven approaches. Combining his experience in research, data analysis, software engineering, and machine learning, he brings expertise and solution development to each client from various verticals to bring more value.
