Data Science Project Manager
As a Data Science Project Manager at SFL Scientific, Mitch Fernandez helps coordinate the clients and the data science and engineering teams to execute AI solution development.
With a background as a computational biologist, Mitch’s experience lies in analysis, computing, and biomedical sciences, with successful careers in military intelligence and computer networking before deciding to investigate biology as information science. He earned his graduate degree at the University of Michigan with funding from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. His research topics included neuroplasticity and motor learning using augmented reality feedback systems to rehabilitate stroke patients with diminished motor skills; metabolomics of aging in mice using distance-based and regression metrics to compare life expectancy to metabolite levels; metagenomics of the human lung, discovering microbial social networks associated with smoking and COPD; clinical diagnostics for autoimmune diseases using frequent pattern mining and machine learning techniques; and other topics related to structural biology, transcriptomics, and genomics.
Prior to joining SFL Scientific, Mitch served on the board of directors of a nonprofit business consulting group, was the CTO of a small biotech company using gene therapy to extend human life, and was a project manager for an enterprise bioinformatics software company. He is an advanced martial artist, a fan of science fiction, and an animal lover.
